These days, more people overseas are interested in learning Korean.

The popularity of the language has especially increased at U.S. universities.

An academic group recently released a report on foreign languages studied in the U.S. in 2016.

According to the report, over 710,000 university students took Spanish class, making it the most studied foreign language in the U.S.

Meanwhile, almost 14,000 students studied Korean that year.

That number was an increase of 13.7 percent from 2013.

This made Korean the 10th most studied foreign language in the U.S.

It is the first time for Korean to make it in the top 10.

Other popular foreign languages studied by U.S. students include French, German, and Japanese.

On the other hand, the academic group said fewer students were signing up for language classes overall.

About 1.4 million university students in the U.S. studied a foreign language in 2016.

That is only around 10 percent of the entire student population.
