#. Schools Offer Online Classes

After staying home for over a month, Korean students have finally returned to their studies.

For the first time ever, they began their school year online.

Normally, the new school year starts in March for elementary, meddle, and high school students.

However, it was postponed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus through crowded classrooms.

At the end of March, however, the viral pandemic looked as if it would last at least several more months.

Rather than wait for the crisis to end, the government decided to try a new approach.

It announced that schools would begin the semester by holding online classes.

In late March, schools and teachers around the nation quickly prepared their online learning curriculum.

They set up webcams and installed wireless networks in classrooms, so that they could broadcast their lessons.

They also organized links to YouTube videos and other online materials that students could then study at home.

At the same time, the government made sure that all students would have access to online learning.

Those who didn't own computers or tablets were able to borrow a device from their school.

Students in the final year of middle school and high school began their classes on April 9.

The remaining middle and high school students, along with upper elementary school students, followed on April 16.

Meanwhile, first to third graders in elementary school were the last to start on April 20.

Government officials said the online education period would be counted as part of the academic year.

Also, they expected the virtual classes to continue until it was deemed safe to physically return to school.
