Man and Penguin Become Friends

Joao Pereira de Souza is a retired bricklayer living near sunny Rio de Janeiro.

One day in 2011, the 71-year-old man was shocked to find a penguin in his backyard.

So,why would a cold-weather animal show up there?

It turned out the penguin had escaped from an oil spill.

It was lost, weak, and drenched in oil.

So, de Souza nursed the penguin back to health and sent it back into the ocean.

A few months later, the penguin returned to de Souza's home.

Since then, it has left and returned year after year.

It usually stays with de Souza from June to February.

Penguins are migratory birds.

They travel vast distances to mate, and then they return home.

Therefore, the penguin may think of de Souza's house as its home.

"I love the penguin like it's my own child," de Souza said "And I believe the penguin loves me, too."
