Recently, Korean researchers developed an alternative to regular coffee.

The new drink may help people who are looking to consume less caffeine.

The Rural Development Administration (RDA) developed the decaffeinated drink.

Researchers at the government agency said they mixed black barley with coffee beans.

According to the researchers, the resulting brew smells and tastes like coffee.

However, it contains 90 percent less caffeine than a cup of coffee.

RDA officials say that barley coffee will be a good option for coffee drinkers who wish to decrease their caffeine intake.

Furthermore, the coffee substitute retains the health benefits of barley, which helps reduce cholesterol and prevent obesity and diabetes.

Moreover, the agency hopes that the new product could help local barley farmers to sell their goods.

"Even if barley coffee replaced 1 percent of coffee imports, it would help farmers to sell about 1,500 tons of barley," an RDA official said.

In 2018, Korea's coffee market was worth 7 trillion won.

About 159,000 tons of coffee beans were brought into the nation.

This made Korea the world's third-biggest coffee importing country.
