"하나의 사회로서, 사람들은 서로에 대해서 갖는 기대치가 있죠. 특정 상황에서 특정 행동을 기대하고 때가 되면 특정 분야에 대한 일정 수준의 지식, 경험 그리고 능력을 기대하게 되고요. 이건 대체적으로 좋은 종류의 압박이에요 왜냐면 사람들로 하여금 스스로 채찍질을 하게 만들고 책임감을 가지게 해주니까요. 근데 또 다른 종류의 사회적 압박이 있어요. 저는 그것을 ‘잘못된 종류’ 라고 부르는데 - 특정 종류의 교육을 추구해야 한다거나 특정 직업을 가져야 한다거나 일정 나이가 되기 전에 결혼을 해야 되고, 아이, 무슨 말인지 알거예요 - 우리 모두 다 겪어본 일이에요. 이것은 생활방식에 대한 선택이에요. 건전한 사회를 위해서는 인간 능력의 다양성이 필요하듯이 우리가 한 선택들이 더 이상적인 것처럼 느껴지도록 이것을 사회적 소외와 따돌림으로 이어지도록 해서는 안되요. 사람들의 다른 생활방식을 받아들일 수 있어야 해요."

 

As a society, we all have certain expectations of one another.We expect people to behave in certain ways in certain situations and, at one point or another, we're all expected to have a certain level of knowledge, experience and skill in certain things. This is good kind of pressure, for the most part, because it demands discipline and a sense of responsibility in people.  But there is another kind of social pressure. I call it "the wrong kind" - the pressure to pursue a certain kind of education, to have a certain type of job, to be married by a certain age, children, you know what I am talking about. We've all been there.

These are lifestyle choices and just as a healthy society depends on the diversity of human abilities, we can't let this lead to social rejection and alienation just to make our (own) choices seem more ideal. We have to be open to different lifestyle of choices.

 

 

 

하나의 사회로서, 사람들은 서로에 대해서 갖는 기대치가 있죠.

As a society, we all have certain expectations of one another.

• have expectations of someone 누군가가 무언가를 할꺼라는 / 해낼꺼라는 기대를 갖다.

• have expectations for something : of / for  기대하는 종류에 따라서 결정

• I have a lot of expectations for this movie. 영화를 보는거에 대한 기대 , 하고 싶어하는 기대, 만나고 싶어하는 기대 에서는 for 

• one another : each other 와 비슷

• 하지만  each other 는 "둘사이에" 라는 의미로 사용될 수 있지만 one another 는 더 큰그룹의 "사람들사이에" 라는 어감으로 쓰기에 더 적합

 

 

특정 상황에서 특정 행동을 기대하고 때가 되면 특정 분야에 대한 일정 수준의 지식, 경험 그리고 능력을 기대하게 되고요.

• 때가 되면 at one point or another 한때 또는 다른  = sooner or later

 

이건 대체적으로 좋은 종류의 압박이에요 왜냐면 사람들로 하여금 스스로 채찍질을 하게 만들고 책임감을 가지게 해주니까요.

This is good kind of pressure, for the most part, because it demands discipline and a sense of responsibility in people.  

• demand 는 꼭 사람이 하는 요구에 대해서만이 아님 - 무엇을 강하게 요구하는 상황에 대해서도 많이 사용

• a sense of responsibility. 책임의 감각 - 책임감   * a seance of belonging  소속

 

근데 또 다른 종류의 사회적 압박이 있어요. 저는 그것을 ‘잘못된 종류’ 라고 부르는데 - 특정 종류의 교육을 추구해야 한다거나 특정 직업을 가져야 한다거나 일정 나이가 되기 전에 결혼을 해야 되고, 아이, 무슨 말인지 알거예요 - 우리 모두 다 겪어본 일이에요.

• pursue  쫓는다, 추척한다 : 추구한다.

• We've all been there 우리 모두 거기에 가봤다 / 우리 모두 경험해봤다.

 

이것은 생활방식에 대한 선택이에요. 건전한 사회를 위해서는 인간 능력의 다양성이 필요하듯이 우리가 한 선택들이 더 이상적인 것처럼 느껴지도록 이것을 사회적 소외와 따돌림으로 이어지도록 해서는 안되요. 사람들의 다른 생활방식을 받아들일 수 있어야 해요.

These are lifestyle choices and just as a healthy society depends on the diversity of human abilities, we can't let this lead to social rejection and alienation just to make our (own) choices seem more ideal. We have to be open to different lifestyle of choices.

• the diversity of human abilities  다양하게 되어있는 상태를 강조 : 다양    diverse human abilities  다양한 인간 능력

• alienation  èiljənéiʃən  멀리함, 소외,

• lead to  ~로 이어지다

• be open to ~~ 열린마음으로 받아들이다.
