"하나의 사회로서, 사람들은 서로에 대해서 갖는 기대치가 있죠. 특정 상황에서 특정 행동을 기대하고 때가 되면 특정 분야에 대한 일정 수준의 지식, 경험 그리고 능력을 기대하게 되고요. 이건 대체적으로 좋은 종류의 압박이에요 왜냐면 사람들로 하여금 스스로 채찍질을 하게 만들고 책임감을 가지게 해주니까요. 근데 또 다른 종류의 사회적 압박이 있어요. 저는 그것을 ‘잘못된 종류’ 라고 부르는데 - 특정 종류의 교육을 추구해야 한다거나 특정 직업을 가져야 한다거나 일정 나이가 되기 전에 결혼을 해야 되고, 아이, 무슨 말인지 알거예요 - 우리 모두 다 겪어본 일이에요. 이것은 생활방식에 대한 선택이에요. 건전한 사회를 위해서는 인간 능력의 다양성이 필요하듯이 우리가 한 선택들이 더 이상적인 것처럼 느껴지도록 이것을 사회적 소외와 따돌림으로 이어지도록 해서는 안되요. 사람들의 다른 생활방식을 받아들일 수 있어야 해요."

 

As a society, we all have certain expectations of one another.We expect people to behave in certain ways in certain situations and, at one point or another, we're all expected to have a certain level of knowledge, experience and skill in certain things. This is good kind of pressure, for the most part, because it demands discipline and a sense of responsibility in people.  But there is another kind of social pressure. I call it "the wrong kind" - the pressure to pursue a certain kind of education, to have a certain type of job, to be married by a certain age, children, you know what I am talking about. We've all been there.

These are lifestyle choices and just as a healthy society depends on the diversity of human abilities, we can't let this lead to social rejection and alienation just to make our (own) choices seem more ideal. We have to be open to different lifestyle of choices.
