How Mosquitoes Find Us

Many of us say that summer is our favorite season.

Unfortunately, mosquitoes love the summertime, too.

All summer long, we tried to keep the pesky insects away from us.

But whatever we do, they always seem to find us.

In fact, mosquitoes have many different ways to find humans.

First, they can detect the carbon dioxide from our breath.

They can do this from nine meters away.

When they get closer, mosquitoes can detect our body heat.

Then, their legs can taste our skin and choose the "best" place to land.

Early this year, some scientists made another discovery.

They found that mosquitoes even have a sense of smell.

The insects can smell our sweat with their antennae.

This way, they can also tell the difference between humans and animals.

So now, you may think it is impossible to avoid mosquitoes.

But don't worry, there is some good news, too.

The scientists found how to change the mosquitoes' antennae.

This kept the mosquitoes from smelling us.

When the scientists did this, the mosquitoes became less interested in humans.

They stopped looking for our blood!
