#. Indonesia Cancels Traveling Dolphin Circus

Animal rights activists in Indonesia scored an important victory recently.

As of February 5, the Indonesia Traveling Dolphin Circus no longer tours with its captive dolphins.

The announcement came as the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry decided not to renew the circus's permits.

Since opening its doors in 2009, the circus has been the constant target of protests, petitions, and government lobbying.

One organization, Dolphin Project, investigated the circus and found that dolphins there were subjected to shocking conditions.

During the shows, the dolphins were made to perform many times a  day in small pools with excessive chlorine.

The animals were also malnourished but received only small pieces of fish to make them more willing to perform.

On top of this, they were forced to spend days inside cramped boxes as they traveled from place to place.

These conditions earned the circus the nickname "the world's cruelest dolphin show."

Experts argue that dolphin shows such as these are especially problematic as dolphins are one of the most intelligent species on the planet.

In the wild, these highly social animals live in families called pods.

The pods can travel hundreds of kilometers each day and usually stay together for life.

With this in mind, it is easy to see why dolphin shows are becoming a thing of the past.

The ministry's decision follows a growing trend against using animals as entertainment.

Responding to pressure from activists and celebrities, places like SeaWorld have cancelled dolphin show in the United States and Australia.

Interestingly, some companies have gone as far as get rid of animals, altogether.

In Germany, the Circus Roncalli switched to using 3D holograms instead of live animals to eliminate concerns of animals cruelty.

Though the dolphin performances are no longer part of its tour, the Indonesian Traveling Circus still continues holding them at its permanent location.

Activists say they will continue to fight to ensure the well-being of these precious creatures.
