Recently, the government came to an agreement with large retailers in the nation.

Together, they hope to reduce the amount of waste created through shopping.

Each time a shopper makes a purchase, a paper receipt is issued.

These days, however, people usually pay with their credit cards or debit cards, and right afterwards, they receive a text message from their card companies.

The majority of the time, shoppers immediately throw away paper receipts without even looking at them.

Over 1.2 million copies of paper receipts are reportedly issued every year.

This produces 9,300 tons of paper waste and costs companies over 100 billion won.

To tackle this problem, the government made an agreement with some large retailers, such as E-mart, Homeplus, and Lotte Mart.

According to the agreement, paper receipts will only be issued when the customer asks for it.

Others will just check their electronic receipts on their smartphones.

In addition, the retailers agreed to stop providing paper boxes for packing .

This is to reduce the use of plastic strings and packing tape, which are not recyclable.

Over 600 tons of wastes are produced annually from the plastic products.
