Fires Rage in Amazon Rain-forest

The Amazon rain-forest in Brazil is facing a serious crisis.

Huge wildfires, most of which were started by humans, is devastating the ecologically important region.

According to environmentalists, an unprecedented number of fires have raged throughout Brazil in 2019.

By August, more than 80,000 fires have been spotted this year, including over 40,000 in the Amazon rain-forest.

This is an 80 percent increase over the same period in 2018, as well as the most in history.

The wildfires have become so vast that some are said to be seen from space.

It may be hard to believe, but the majority of these fires was intentionally begun by man.

In a practice aptly named "slash-an-burn," Brazilian farmers and companies are cutting down large patches of forest and setting the remains ablaze.
