Hong Kong Protests

In recent months, a series of protests has hit Hong Kong.

The ongoing struggle may affect the future of the city.

Hong Kong has an unusual history compared to other Chines cities.

For over 150 years, it was actually a British colony.

Because of this, the city is heavily influenced by Western culture and values.

In 1997, the British returned Hong Kong to China.

However, the port city was allowed to keep much of its independence.

For example, it still has a separate legal system from China.

This past June, the Hong Kong chief executive proposed a controversial law.

It would allow criminal suspects in Hong Kong to be sent to the courts in mainland China.

The proposed law angered many Hong Kong citizens.

They said it would violate the independence of the Hong Kong legal system.

They began protests to fight the law.

Finally, the violent protests made the Hong Kong leader take back her proposal.

However, the protesters didn't stop gathering and fighting the police.

Instead, they began demanding more independence and freedom from China.

Months later, these protests continued to take place throughout Hong Kong.

The world is waiting to see what will happen.
