Optical illusions are based on deception.
Due to the arrangement of shapes, colors, and lines, the illusion fool us into seeing something that is not actually there.
There are many kinds of optical illusions.
Among them, there are illusions that seem to be in constant motion.
These are made with strong colors as well as repeating shapes and patterns.
These illusions are called physiological illusions, because the images affect the way we physically see.
Scientists are not completely certain how and why physiological illusions work.
But they believe it has to do with the strong color contrasts.
When the contrasting colors enter our retinas, our eyes perceive a flickering where the colors meet.
Our brain then takes this visual information and interprets the flickering as continuous movement.
That is why pairs of colors that create the greatest contrast - such as blue and yellow or black and white - are particularly effective.
Another kind of illusion is called cognitive illusion.
These illusions connect to how we think about the world and the rules that help us understand it.
Cognitive illusions exploit the automatic parts of our thought process and use them to trick us into seeing the impossible.
Thus, we are able to see paradoxical illusions, such as a single image that is simultaneously a rabbit and a duck, or an endlessly looping structure that defies logic.
Our minds get confused as we try to resolve these paradoxes.
But as confusing as they might be, many find it highly enjoyable trying to solve the visual puzzles.
