Doctors say that sleep is a key contributor to a person's health and well-being.

However, it turns out most Koreans are not getting enough of it.

In early 2019, the Dutch electronics company Philips conducted a survey examining sleep habits in 12 countries.

According to the survey, about 62 percent of people worldwide feel they don't get a good night's sleep.

In particular, about 65 percent of Koreans said that they were dissatisfied with their sleep habits.

This was the highest among the countries surveyed.

Many Koreans answered that the quality of their sleep worsened in the past five years.

The country ranked low when it came to the average amount of sleep.

Korean adults slept around 6.8 hours on weeknights and 7.9 hours on weekends.

By contrast, doctors recommend that people get an average of 8 hours of sleep every night.

Other countries with bad sleep habits include Peru, Australia, and Japan.

Meanwhile, India topped the rankings, with only 30 percent answering they were unhappy with the quality of their sleep.

People with bad sleep habits pointed to stress and worry as the main reason for their troubles.

Other factors include sleep environment, work or school schedule, and screen time on smartphones or other electronic devices.

However, doctors say that people can improve the quality of their sleep by following a few simple rules.

First, they should keep to a consistent sleep schedule during weekdays and weekends.

Also, they should reduce the amount of screen time before sleep to 30 to 60 minutes.

Lastly, getting regular exercise will help them to fall asleep easier.
