Due to the wild success of "Parasite, " more people abroad are becoming interested in Korean movies.

In response, some foreign websites have listed their favorite Korean films, thereby introducing them to a new audience.

So, what movies are being recommended by theses overseas critics?

Below are five recent classics that made the list.

 

@ The Age of Shadows (2016)

Directed by Kim Ji-woon, the movie is an action thriller that takes place during the Japanese colonial period.

It tells the story of a Korean police captain who reports members of the resistance to the Japanese government.

The movie was the first to be produced by the Hollywood studio, Warner Bros.

Although it was a modest hit domestically, it was also very well-received abroad.

 

@ The Host (2006)

Even before "Parasite," director Bong Joon-ho had many hit films in the past.

They include "The Host," a blockbuster movie about a monster living in Han River.

When released in 2006, the film set local box office records.

It also received critical acclaim for its unusual approach to the monster-movie genre.

 

@ Poetry (2010)

Lee Chang-dong is another director who has gained great respect internationally.

One film of his that has been showered with praise is "Poetry."

The drama is about an elderly woman who is afflicted with Alzheimer's disease.

She has to deal with her illness as well as her troubled grandson.

 

@ Train to Busan (2016)

Yang Sang-ho made one of the most popular zombie movies in the past decade.

"Train to Busan" proved to be a hit both locally and globally.

The movie is set on an express train traveling from Seoul to Busan.

The story is intense and terrifying.

At the same time, the film successfully explores such complex social issues as the wealth gap.
