Since smartphones first appeared over a decade ago, they have revolutionized the way people communicate.

Despite this, the look and feel of a smartphone - with its rectangular body and glass screen - has changed very little in that time.

Now, Samsung is hoping to breathe new life into smartphone design with its latest offering, the Galaxy Z Flip.

The innovative Z Flip is Samsung's second foldable smartphone, following last year's release of the Galaxy Fold.

But unlike the Galaxy Fold, which opens horizontally,, the Z Flip opens vertically like a clamshell.

The new design allows the Z Flip to fit comfortably in even the smallest pockets.

The Z Flip offers users new features that  were previously unthinkable with ordinary smartphone.

The phone allows the option of multitasking by splitting the two screens.

Moreover, users can lock the screen at a 90 degree angle so that they can video chat hands-free.

More excitingly, the handset is equipped with a 2.8 centimeter cover display that shows users notifications even when the phone is folded.

The first generation Galaxy Fold went on sale in September 2019 and sold roughly 500,000 units.

Compared to the 2.2 million conventional Samsung phones sold over the same period, half a million may seem small.

Still, the foldable phone market is expected to grow to 8 million units in 2020 and 100 million by 2025.

"Foldables can meet the need for small, portable devices, " said one market analyst.

Samsung is seeking to cement its position as an early adopter of the foldable phone.

Yet already, other tech companies are setting their sights on what promises to be a lucrative market.

Foldable smartphones such as Huawei's Mate X and Motorola's RAZR offer similar features at competitive prices and could take a chunk out of the Z Flip's projected sales.

For now, the future of foldable smartphones is still up in the air.

Soon, however, we may look down at our foldable phones and wonder just how we were able to live without them.
