Student Barred for Dreadlocks

High school senior Deandre Arnold began growing dreadlocks in seventh grade.

Now, he is battling officials at his Texas school because of his hair.

The officials said his hair didn't meet the dress code because of its length.

Consequently, they barred him from returning to school and attending his graduation ceremony.

However, Arnold old says his hairstyle is symbolic of his heritage.

Arnold's father is from Trinidad, a Caribbean island nation where men often wear dreadlocks.

Fortunately, media attention has been positive.

Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres presented him with a scholarship worth 20,000 dollars.

She said boys should be allowed to wear long hair.

Then in February,  Arnold was invited to attend the Academy Awards by the directors of "Hair Love," an animated short film.

When the movie won an Oscar, the directors mentioned him in their acceptance speech.
