Have ever wished you could choose your classes in school?
This may become a reality in Korean high schools when an academic credit system is introduced in the near future.
At present, the academic credit system is only used at the university level in Korea.
In order to graduate, college students are required to complete a certain number of credit hours per semester or year.
So, they sign up for courses that give them different credit hours upon completion.
Aside from courses needed for their major, students have the freedom to choose from a range of academic subjects.
They usually select courses that are related to their field, but they can also take some interesting classes outside of their major.
In January 2019, the Ministry of Education announced its plans to establish a similar academic credit system at the high school level.
Much like university students, high schoolers would sign up for courses with different credit hours at the beginning of the semester or year.
Throughout the day, they would move freely between classrooms to study their chosen subjects.
The ministry said that the academic credit system would offer many advantages for high school students.
They could choose a course of study that better matches their individual interests and future plans.
They would also have more say in the direction of their education and be better prepared for the future.
According to the ministry, 728 high schools will receive funding to operate pilot programs and test the system's viability in 2020.
Then gradually, it will work to get all Korean high schools ready to make the switch in 2025.
