What do students want to be when they grow up?

A recent survey shed light on the dream jobs of Korean students from elementary school to high school.

The survey was conducted by the Ministry of Education and a think tank.

They asked questions to over 24,000 students in 1,200 schools around the nation.

The students were asked to select the jobs that they wished to have when they grew up.

For elementary school students, the top two dream jobs were athlete and teacher, respectively.

These jobs have remained at the top of the list for over a decade.

Athlete has especially been a popular choice among male students since the rise of soccer player Son Heng-min.

However, the third job on the elementary school students' list was content creator, which includes YouTubers and broadcast jockeys (BJs).

Other jobs involving the internet also ranked high on the list, including pro gamer at 6th place and webtoon artist at 11th place.

Meanwhile, middle and high school students did not choose content creator or any of the internet-based professions as their dream jobs.

Instead, both their lists included teacher, police officer, and other civil servants.

The makers of the survey said this showed how younger students tended to choose jobs that they believed would be enjoyable.

For older students, the choice of dream jobs became more pragmatic.

They looked for jobs that they felt were more secure in the long term.

At the same time, jobs like athlete and doctor were also popular choices for middle school students.

For high school students, their list included computer engineer, soldier, and CEO.
