Pope Hosts Lunch for the Poor

Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, held a special lunch on November 17.

With the help of 50 volunteers, he broke bread with 1,500 poor people at the Vatican.

The simple meal consisted of lasagna, chicken with mushrooms and potatoes, dessert, fruit, and espresso coffee.

Before the meal,the pope thanked all those who were present and asked God to bless them and their families.

The special lunch took place to mark the World Day of the Poor.

The pope created this special day three years ago to bring attention to the world's needy.

It has become a tradition for the pope to host the large-scale lunch on this day every year.

The pope chose the name Francis after the saint of the poor.

Since being elected pope in 2013, he made it his goal to raise awareness about global poverty.
