Fish Cake or "Eomuk"?

From May to July, an interesting contest was held in the nation.

Its goal was to find an English name for a well-known Korean food.

Korean fish cakes are a delicious seafood dish.

They are eaten as both a meal and snack by Koreans.

They are also becoming popular abroad.

The Ministry Ocean and Fisheries thought Korean fish cakes needed a better English name.

So, it held a naming contest.

For two months, many people submitted their ideas.

Then, a committee of seafood experts chose the best ones.

In late September, the winning name was announced.

The ministry said fish cakes would now be called "eomuk" in English.

The person who submitted this name received the top prize of 2 million won.

Some people liked the new English name for fish cakes.

However, others were confused by the choice.

They said "eomuk" was the Remanization of the food's Korean name.

It was already commonly used in Korea and overseas.
