이번 영상에서 집중해야 할 3가지 표현 :

1. mainly because

2. that's partly the reason (why)

3. some of it (simply) has to do with the fact that

 

My sister and I aren't very close. I think it's mainly because we just have very different lifestyles, so we simply don't have very much in common.

When we were growing up, she stayed with our uncle in Singapore for many years and she did most of her schooling there.

So, we never really got a chance to know each other and I think that's partly the reason why.

And, I guess some of it simply has to do with the fact that I'm a man and she's a woman, you know?

We can only communicate and share so much. Especially without that initial bond as brother and sister, we’re practically strangers.

저는 누나랑 별로 안친해요.

"My sister and I aren't very close."

• 사람 간의 친한 사이에 대해서 얘기할 때 'close'라는 단어로 표현하고 가능하면 거론되고 있는 사람들을 주어에 group으로 모두 등장시키는 것이 좋아.

 

라이프스타일이 서로 많이 달라서 공통점이 별로 없다는 것이 가장 큰것 같아요.

I think it's mainly because we just have very different lifestyles, so we simply don't have very much in common.

• It's mainly because ~    ~ 이 가장 큰 이유이다.

• ".. so we don't have very much in common.":

• 공통점이 있고 / 많고 / 없다는 얘기를 할 때 "have ------ in common"으로 표현

 

어렸을 때 누나는 싱가포르에 있는 삼촌이랑 오래 지내면서 거기서 학교를 다녔어요.

• "When we were growing up..."

• 어린 시절에 대해서 얘기할 때 "When we were young/little,..."라고도 하지만, 이렇게 "우리가 성장하고 있었을때", "크고 있었을 때"로 표현을 자주 함.

• "She did most of her schooling there"

• '학교를 다니다'라는 의미로 'school'라는 단어를 이렇게 동사로 쓸 수 있다 (문맥에 따라 어색할 수도 있음)

 

그래서 저희가 친해질 기회가 없었는데, 그런 이유도 있는것 같아요. 

So, we never really got a chance to know each other and I think that's partly the reason why.

• "We never really had a chance to ...."

• 무엇을 할 기회가 전혀 없었거나 좋은 기회가 없었다는 얘기를 할 때 많이 쓰는 표현

 

그리고 저는 남자고 누나는 여자라는 부분도 있어요.

And, I guess some of it simply has to do with the fact that I'm a man and she's a woman, you know?

• A has to do with B        A는 B랑 관련이 있다 / 연관이 있다 / 상관이 있다.

• some of it 그것의 일부분

 

서로 통하는 데에 한계가 있으니까요.

We can only communicate and share so much.

• "can only + so much"  (우리나라 사람들이 공감하기 어려워하는 표현 중 하나) 아주 흔히 사용되는 표현방식으로

• "------에는 한계가 있다"는 의미로 쓰인다  there is a limit to how much we can do something

 

특히, 애초에 남매로서의 유대감이 없으니까 남남이나 다름이 없어요.

Especially without that initial bond as brother and sister, we’re practically strangers.
