Sweden Says "No" to Planes

Greta Thunberg is a teenager from Sweden.

She is a famous environmental activist.

Recently, she has been  participating in important international meetings on climate change.

These meetings are in North and South America.

Surprisingly, Thunberg did not fly in an airplane from Europe.

Instead, she spent two weeks in a high-speed motorboat to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

Actually, Thunberg is one of many people in Sweden to stop riding on airplanes.

Like the teen activist, these Swedes are trying hard to protect the Earth.

Airplanes are a fast and convenient way to travel.

However, they also produce a huge amount of air pollution.

In fact, planes make about 2.5 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions.

So, a growing number of Swedes are saying "no" to airplanes.

When they visit other countries in Europe, they mostly take trains.

When they go to other continents, some even travel by boat, just like thunberg.

These journeys may take a longer time, but they will help the fight against global warming.
