Students Discover Stars

Recently, a great number of stars were discovered.

Believe it or not, the stars were all found by high school students in Korea.

Shim Kyu-heon and Kim Seung-hyeon attend Ulsan Science High School.

The two students are greatly interested in astronomy.

So, they decided to start a project to find new stars.

However, the high school seniors did not look through a telescope to find the stars.

Instead, they accessed public data about star movements.

This data came from a space telescope of the European Space Agency.

Using a powerful computer, Shim and Kim created a program to calculate the data.

Through their calculation, they discovered the location of a new star cluster.

The cluster is in the Milky Way galaxy and contains 209 new stars.

They are about 3,300 light years from Earth.

"The students found something that was previously unknown to astronomers," said the professor who advised the students on the project.

Shim and Kim named their star cluster UPK.

The initials stand for Ulsan, their hometown; Pusan, the hometown of their advisor; and Korea, their country.
