#. Tokyo Olympics Officially Postponed

The 2020 Summer Olympics has officially been postponed.

After weeks of consideration, organizers officially announced that the event would be delayed by one year.

The summer Games are now set to begin on July 23, 2021.

The decision to reschedule the Olympics was made in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

When the coronavirus outbreak first began, Tokyo had already completed preparations for the games and maintained an optimistic attitude.

Yet despite assurances from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that the event would go on as planned, the rising number of cases raised concerns over public safety.

As the situation worsened, sports federations and athletes from around the world started calling for the Olympics to be canceled.

Then, in late March, Canada and Australia announced they were withdrawing their athletes from the competition.

Although postponing the Tokyo Olympics may sound simple, the cost of rescheduling the games is actually massive.

The Japanese government is currently spending 12.6 billion dollars on the Olympics.

In addition, private investment in venues and other related construction projects is about 92 billion dollars.

To offset these costs, Japanese businesses were counting on the 33 million projected visitors to the country.

However, now that the event has been postponed, businesses will have to wait an entire year to recuperate their money.

"Since the Olympics were scheduled for this summer, all the venues had given up hosting any other events during this time," said chief organizer Yoshiro Muto.

Still, there is on possible silver lining to postponing the Olympics.

At a time when the world is suffering through the worst pandemic in a century, delaying the games gives organizers another year to rethink their mission and focus on bringing the world together.
