Most dog owners walk their pet once a day.

This habit is good for both the dog and its owner.

In Australia, however, walking the dog will soon become a law.

The law will be introduced to Canberra, Australia's capital, and its surrounding territory.

Beginning next March, people there could be fined 4,000 Australian dollars for not exercising their dog.

The same fine will also be handed out for not providing dogs with proper food, water, or shelter.

Moreover, there will be huge penalties for people who participate in cruel acts against dogs, including dog fighting.

They will be fined 48,000 Australian dollars and face up to three years in jail.

Australian government officials said the laws would protect dogs from greater abuse.

They hope to encourage people to respect the mental and physical health of their pets.
