In the past, coffee was considered a beverage just for adults.
These days, however, more and more teenagers are consuming the caffeinated beverage.
In the United States, about 73 percent of adolescents consume caffeine daily.
Most of this is from coffee, energy drinks, and soda.
Students who consume coffee say these drinks help to keep them more alert and less tired in class.
Indeed, coffee culture has become so accepted in the U.S. that a few high schools even offer coffee bars on site, where students can buy their drinks.
Many doctors say there is a safe amount of caffeine for teenagers between 14 and 17.
If less than 100 milligrams of caffeine is consumed in a day. caffeine does not harm a teenager.
That said, doctors say there is no health benefit to it either.
However, coffee contains much more caffeine than soda.
In fact, a teenager who drinks one small cup of strong coffee can already exceed the safe amount of caffeine.
Furthermore, a large cup of coffee can contain over 200 milligrams of caffeine.
Caffeine in high doses can cause problems for both adolescents and adults.
They can get restless and anxious during the day and suffer from insomnia at night.
Extreme amounts of coffee can raise the heart rate to dangerous levels.
Because of these potential problems, doctors recommend people to keep an eye on their coffee consumption.
Teenagers, especially, should be careful about their coffee intake.
