"Parasite" Makes History at the Oscars

History was made in Korean cinema at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles on February 9.

"Parasite" by director Bong Joon-ho became the first Korean film to win at the prestigious awards ceremony.

In fact, "Parasite" dominated this year's event, taking home four of the main awards.

The black comedy about social inequality received Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature Film, and Best Director.

Then, the historical night was topped off by "Parasite" being named Best Picture, the most coveted of all the awards.

The audience roared in surprise and delight at the announcement, as the World War One movie "1917" was considered the front-runner before the ceremony.

The choice was doubly surprising because, in the 92-year history of the Oscars, a non-English movie had never received the Best Picture award, though some were nominated.

Mostly, subtitled works were relegated to the category of Best Foreign Film, which was renamed Best International Feature Film this year.

Bong and the rest of the cast received numerous standing ovations throughout the night.

One of the most touching moments came during Bong's acceptance speech for Best Director.

He took time to salute the other four nominated filmmakers, especially Quentin Tarantino and the 77-year-old Martin Scorsese.

"When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, which is that the most personal is the most creative," said Bong through his interpreter.

"That quote was from our great Martin Scorsese."

Other winners of the night included Joaquin Phoenix and Renee Zellweger, who were named Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively.

Meanwhile, Hollywood start Brad Pitt received the Best Supporting Actor prize, which was his first acting Oscar.

The Best Supporting Actress award was given to Laura Dern.
