Instagram is one of the most popular social media sites around the world.

Users of the site use the sharp (#) symbol and keywords - known together as hashtag - to search for and share specific information.

The hashtags can also reflect popular trends of the times.

So, what were the most popular Instagram hashtags of 2019 in Korea?

According to the site, "#gongstagram" was the nation's most shared hashtag last year.

The word gongstagram merges "gongbu," which means "study" in Korean, with "instagram."

In refers to a popular trend in which students share their study plans or notes on Instagram and see other people's posts to motivate themselves.

Among the 50 most popular hashtags, about 20 of them were related to sympathy and sentiment.

People followed such hashtags to read touching or encouraging words during their busy day.

Also, many fashion-related hashtags were followed by Koreans.

People searched "#dailylook" to keep up with the latest fashion and get ideas of what to wear.

In addition, people looked up posts about their favorite celebrities through Instagram.

"#BTS" earned the most followers, while "#IU" and "#Irene" ranked second and third in the K-pop category.
