Did you read a lot of books in 2019?
If you did, chances are you picked up at least one collection of essays.
Kyobo Bookstore recently released its list of the top-selling books in 2019.
According to the company, the majority of the bestsellers were essay collections.
By contrast, fiction works saw a 10 percent decrease in sales compared to the previous year.
The following are the top three bestselling books in 2019, according to Kyobo Bookstore.
@ 'The Reason for Traveling' by Kim Young-ha
The author writes about his traveling experiences, from the first trip he ever took to his best journey ever.
The essays are not just details of his travel itinerary, however.
Rather, Kim, who is also a novelist, uses his travel stories to talk about larger questions, including the meaning of life and writing.
@ 'Things That Get Bright as It Gets Quiet' by Hyemin Sunim
The Buddhist monk, who is already famous for numerous bestselling books, returned with a new book of essays in 2019.
Divided into six chapters, Hyemin takes on various topics, including finding wisdom during times of hardship and discovering one's true path to happiness and success.
In one chapter, he talks about the meaning of family by writing about his own past.
@ 'I decided to Live as Me' by Kim Su-hyeon
The author says she wrote this self-help book in order to advise young people who are struggling to understand adulthood.
In her non-fiction book, Kim talks about the pressures of contemporary society to compete with each other and be accepted into groups.
She offers insight on ways to overcome these pressures in order to gain self-confidence and find the true "me" in ourselves.
