#. Positive Health Effects of Music

From raising our spirits to giving us a beat to dance to, music has the power to transform our emotions and experiences.

Now, a new scientific study suggests that listening to music can also help us maintain a healthy body and mind.

Psychologists at the British Academy of Sound Therapy (BAST) have been studying the therapeutic effects of music for years.

Their latest study was the Music as Medicine project, and through it, they examined the relationship between music and positive neural responses in the brain.

They also checked how long it took for these responses to be triggered.

The researchers began by surveying over 7,500 participants about the importance of music in their lives.

Interestingly, they found that an overwhelming number of respondents use music to manage their emotions and stress levels on a daily basis.

After concluding the project, the psychologists found that it took about 11 minutes on average for the beneficial effects of music to kick in.

Moreover, they learned that different genres of music had different effects on emotion.

For instance, test subjects who listened to slow, relaxing ambient music said they got a better night's sleep, felt restful and contented, and had fewer negative thoughts.

Meanwhile, subjects who listened to fast pop music with happy lyrics reported higher energy levels, an overall happier attitude, and an increased feeling of being in control of their lives.

With these results in mind, the psychologists created a guideline for the daily recommended allowance of music, totaling 78 minutes a day.

Using food and nutrition as an analogy, they advise people to listen to various genres of music for certain lengths of time to manage different aspects of their emotional well-being.

By following these simple guidelines, the researchers say we can consistently experience the health benefits of music.
