100 Years of Korean Cinema

This year, Korea celebrated an important anniversary.

The nation's movie industry turned 100 years old on October 27.

On that day in 1919, the first Korean movie was screened in the nation.

The movie was titled "Fight for Justice."

It was actually a mixture of a film and a theatrical performance.

Actors performed on a stage in front of projected images.

During the Japanese colonial period, there were few Korean films made.

Then, after the Korean War, domestic movies really took off.

Over the years, the Korean film industry grew into the fifth largest in the world.

Nowadays, top movies are watched by over 10 million Koreans.

Also, many Korean movies are screened worldwide.

Some films even get remade abroad.

This year, there were different events to celebrate Korean cinema's 100th birthday.

Special screenings and exhibitions of classic movies took place throughout the nation.

In addition, 100 Korean directors took part in a special video project.

Each director made a short movie for the anniversary.
