How would you like to be a prince or princess?

Most people might say they would love it.

However, two real members of the British royal family recently rejected this special life.

Prince Harry is one of the grandsons of Queen Elizabeth it.

In 2019, he married Meghan Markle, an American actress.

Together, they are known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Then in early 2020, the young royal couple made a big announcement.

They said they wanted to live like ordinary people.

The couple said they would not give up their titles as Duke and Duchess.

However, they would step back from most of their royal duties.

In return, they would give up many benefits of being royals.

Prince Harry said the negative media attention was a big reason for their decision.

The British press was especially harsh towards Markle, who is African American.

So, they hoped to live part of their lives in North America, away from the British media.

"From now on, you can just call me Harry," the Duke of Sussex said.

The announcement took the United Kingdom and the British royal family by surprise.

Meanwhile, the queen said she was disappointed but accepted the decision of her grandson and granddaughter-in-law.
