Subway Stations High in Fine Dust

A new report by Seoul Metro looked at the air pollution level inside subway stations in the capital.

According to the report, these stations are not safe from fine dust.

The main cause of the fine dust is the subway trains themselves.

The trains use their brakes as they arrive at a station.

Every time they do this, their wheels grind on the tracks, and the friction produces large amounts of iron powder.

Seoul Metro found that a total of 35 kilograms of iron powder are produced each month at the subway stations in Seoul.

This iron powder in fine dust from can be breathed in by subway passengers and cause long-term health problems.

What's more, the iron powder makes its way out of the stations through the air vents.

So, it can also affect pedestrians who pass by the stations.

Seoul Metro and the government promised to increase and improve the purification systems in the subway stations.

Also, they hope to introduce eco-friendly subway cars that can reduce iron powder in the future.
