NASA is preparing to take the next step in its Mars project.

The U.S. space agency will launch its latest rover towards our neighboring planet in July.

The Mars rover is named Perseverance, but many are already calling it by its nickname, Percy.

When choosing a name for the rovers, NASA holds a nationwide contest for school-age children.

This time, a middle school student submitted the winning entry.

"The name captures the spirit of exploration," a NASA official said.

"Its inspiring work will always require perseverance.

Weighing about 1 ton, Perseverance is scheduled to touch down on the surface of Mars in early 2021.

Its mission will be to assess the climate and geology of the Red Planet.

The rover will focus on searching for signs of past microbial life, as well as collect samples of Martian rocks and dusts.

These samples will then be returned to Earth via future missions set for 2026.

@ Curiosity and Insight

Perseverance will join its fellow rover Curiosity and the Insight lander in exploring Mars.

Already, these two robotic scientists have collected a great amount of information about the Red Planet.

Curiosity has journeyed great distances since arriving on Mars in 2012.

Through its travels, the robotic vehicle learned that Mars had the right chemistry to support living microbe in the ancient past.

It also analyzed radiation that may be dangerous to astronauts during possible manned missions in the future.

Insight is a stationary Lander that touched down on Mars in 2018.

By digging into the surface, it has given information about the planet's interior for the first time.

It is also recording and measuring "Mars-quakes," which occur regularly.
