#. Sports Leagues Suspend Season
The coronavirus epidemic has affected nearly every aspect of society.
It has also had an unprecedented effect on the world of sports, as nearly all the leagues worldwide have suspended their seasons.
In Korea, the situation began in late February.
As the number of coronavirus cases began to rise, the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) and other sports leagues began to look for alternatives.
At first, some Korean leagues tried playing their games without spectators.
Teams competed in empty stadiums and venues while the games were broadcast live.
As the viral epidemic continued, however, even these leagues decided to shut down for the rest of the season.
In the United States, the situation unfolded dramatically in the National Basketball Association (NBA) on March 11.
A game was called off just before tip-off because one basketball player was showing symptoms of the COVID-19 virus.
Later, it was confirmed that the player had indeed been infected with the virus.
By mid-March, almost all major sports leagues throughout the world had suspended their seasons.
Tennis and golf tournaments, cycling races, swim meets, and many more events were postponed for at least several months.
Others were cancelled outright.
In Europe, local soccer matches as well as the matches for the Euro League Championships have been postponed indefinitely or called off.
Qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup have also been put on hold.
"This is in the best interest of our fans and players," one sports league official said.
"Hopefully, we can resume play soon."
