On February 19, Korea sent a new satellite into space.

The Chollian-2B is now in orbit and watching over the Korean Peninsula.

The Korean satellite was sent space on a European rocket.

The launch successfully took place from French Guiana in South America.

After separating from the rocket, the satellite reached a geostationary orbit of 36,000 kilometres above the equator.

The Chollian-2B is the third satellite in Korea's Chollian program.

The first Chollian satellite was launched in 2008.

Ten years later, Korea began upgrading the program with a pair of new satellites.

The first of the satellites, the Chollian-2A, reached orbit in late 2018.

It was then followed by the Chollian-2B this year.

The Chollian-2B is the first satellite to be made completely by Korean scientists and engineers.

They spent about nine years designing and constructing the spacecraft.

The satellite's job will be to monitor the Korean Peninsula and surrounding Asian nations.

It is equipped with two advanced sensors, which will measure air pollution as well as changes in the ocean environment.

The scientists hope that the information will help them tackle Asia's environmental problems, such as fine dust and global warming.

Along with its sister satellite, the Chollian-2B will remain in operation for the next 10 years.
