What if, Suppose, Supposing

 

 

모두 미래의 가능성에 대해 설명이나 질문하는 것이에요.  대부분의 경우 바꿔서 사용 가능해요.  미묘한 차이가 있지만, 아주 미묘해요.

They all make statements or questions of future possibilities, and for the most part they are interchangeable. There are subtle differences, but very subtle.

 

■ What if ?

가정할 수 있는 미래의 가능성에 대한 질문을 하기 위해 사용되죠.  사람들은 “what if” 시나리오라고 불러요.

What if ? this is used to question hypothetical future possibilities. People call them “what if” scenarios.

 

 

▶ What if the world stopped spinning?

= 만약 세상이 돌기를 멈추면 어떡하지?

▶ What if I lost my job?

= 직장을 잃으면 어떡하지?

▶ What if he asks me on a date?

= 그가 나한테 데이트 요청하면 어떡하지?

= 그 사람이 거짓말쟁이면 어떡하지?

■ Suppose ?

가능성으로서의 무엇이나, 논쟁이나, 전제나, 논리를 위한 무엇인가를 예측합니다.

Suppose ? This is assuming something as a possibility or for the sake of an argument or proposition or theory.

 

▶ Suppose we wait until tomorrow?

= 내일 까지 기다려야 될까.

▶ Suppose the boss asks us to do a formal presentation, what should we do?

= 사장님이 공식 발표를 하기를 원하시면, 우리 어떻게 해야 할까?

▶ What do you suppose he will do?  

= 그가 뭘 할 것이라고 생각해?

▶ The machine is supposed to control the engine output. (theoretical)

= 이 기계는 엔진 출력을 조정하기 위한 것이에요. (이론상)

Supposing ? in the event that or upon the premise that.

 

▶ Supposing we do take it seriously, then we have some things to worry about.

= 우리가 이걸 심각하게 받아들인다고 생각해봐, 그럼 우리는 뭔가 우려해야 할 것이 있어.

▶ Supposing it is raining in New York?

= 뉴욕에는 비가 오고 있나?

▶ This is supposing they can get here on time, then we should be able to see the movie tonight.
