According to a recent survey, Korean students spend about 6.2 hours at private academic institutes every week.

Many even go there on weekends to attend lectures.

However, this situation may change in the future.

In late August, the Seoul Education Office made an announcement.

It is considering banning all Sunday classes at private academic institutes.

Many parents and students said they would support such a policy.

They said that all students needed at least one day a week to rest.

A ban on classes on Sundays would ensure that they get a break.

Others, however, were critical of the proposal.

They said the ban would only encourage parents to hire private tutors instead.

Also, students may spend even more hours at the institutes on weekdays.

In addition, the critics said some students only had time on weekends to take certain classes.

The ban would then take away their chances of studying at renowned institutes.

The Seoul Education Office said it would decide on the proposed policy by the end of the year.

If approved, the ban on Sunday classes may begin from 2020.
