Facial recognition is a type of digital technology that uses facial features to identify a person.
Already, it is used to unlock phones, secure public areas, and even make purchases at stores.
Recently, however, people have voiced concerns about the safety of facial recognition technology.
Some cities in the United Sates and Europe have ever begun banning the use of facial recognition altogether.
Despite these bans, however, there are many people who support the use of facial recognition.
They say that the technology makes life convenient in many ways.
It allows people to access various online and offline services quickly without having to pull out an identification card or punch in a password.
Also, these supporters say that the technology can help to make society safer.
It can be easily used to identify criminals in a crowd or from a video recording.
This can even effectively deter criminals from committing crimes in the first place.
However, critics of facial recognition say that the technology is a violation of privacy.
They say that millions of innocent citizens would be scanned and identified while criminals are sought out.
This kind of unwanted surveillance in the name of security is unacceptable, they say.
Furthermore, these critics argue that facial recognition can cause too many problems.
For instance, the technology is not completely accurate, and it has been known to make mistakes.
So, people may be misidentified as criminals, or else have their identity stolen because of facial recognition.
Indeed, many metropolitan governments in Europe and the U.S. seem to agree with these critics.
For now, they are not allowing facial recognition to be used in their cities.
