'Eomuk' Wins Naming Prize

From May to July, a contest was held to give a new English name to a popular Korean seafood item.

However, many people were surprised by the final results.

The Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries organized the contest.

It wanted to find a suitable English name for Korean fish cakes.

It said the name "fish cakes" didn't do justice to the delicious seafood item.

The ministry received numerous entries to the contest, and on September 30, the winner was announced.

The ministry said that fish cakes would now be known as "eomuk" in English.

The person who submitted "eomuk" took home the top prize of 2 million won.

The ministry said the winning name was carefully selected by a committee of seafood experts.

The winning submission was judged to have the necessary qualities to represent the food in the global market.

However, some people argued that "eomuk" was just the Romanized version of the Korean name, which was already commonly used here and abroad.

So, they argued that the winner didn't deserve the monetary prize.
