#. The Mystery of Sailing Stones

Recently, NASA shared an unusual image for its Picture of the Day series.

It showed a large rock by itself in Death Valley, a vast desert in southwestern United States.

A long track behind the rock made it seem as if the rock had moved on its own.

The rock is called a sailing stone, also known as a sliding rock.

And believe it or not, it moves across one part of Death Valley without any human or animal intervention.

The movement of sailing stones had baffled scientists for many years.

It was not until 2013 that they were able to solve the mystery.

In winter, very thin ice sheets formed around the stones at night, and the wind gently pushed them.

During the day, the ice sheet melted, leaving only mysterious tracks on the ground to show the stones' movement.
